From the area’s homicide unit investigation, there were even clues as to the identity of one of the people involved in the support group: a Greek known for his ties to nightlife and organized crime. However, the facts against him, at least initially, were not considered sufficient to warrant his arrest and trial.

In recent months, officers in charge of the case have tried – in consultation with prosecutors – to fill in the missing pieces of the investigation’s puzzle. In fact, some information, however, refuted by competent sources, says that there are thoughts and proposals that the case materials be submitted to the court with the expectation that the pre-investigation materials will be assessed by the prosecutor’s office as sufficient for initiating a criminal case. prosecution of a particular suspect.

The murder of Giorgos Karaivaz took place at noon on April 9, 2021 near his house on Temos Anninos Street in Alimos. The journalist was returning from the studio of the Zvezda TV company, where he worked. He parked his car 20 meters from the entrance to the apartment building where he lived with his wife and son Dmitry. As soon as he dismounted, two attackers following him on a black scooter fired at least ten times at him, fatally wounding him. The minister spoke of a “terrible crime”, noting that “the police will very quickly find the killers and bring them to justice.”

The murder of Karaiwaz was linked to organized crime from the start, and the demand for a speedy investigation was passed directly to the security officers investigating. Moreover, there were a number of executions of death sentences, which created the impression of uncontrolled organized crime in the country.

Karaivaz wrote about some of the killings and what happened in the night area on the Blocko website he runs. In fact, in the two cases of Dimitris Malamas and Dimitris Kapetanakis, the first in 2019 and the second in late 2020, the journalist told Blok in emotionally charged texts that he was on friendly terms. with victims. In addition, the name of Karaivaz was mentioned in the information report of the Ministry of Internal Affairs on the case of the so-called Greek mafia, where he, as a suspect, was asked to give an explanation.

In the first hours after the murder, homicide officers worked in two shifts: about 40 officers equipped with laptops collected video footage of the murder scene and roads by which the attackers could have escaped. They collected more than 300 surveillance videos, which were carefully processed over several months. They managed to reconstruct the escape route of the black Beverly from Alimos to Petrou Ralli street in the Nice area, as well as map the movements of the support group and collect information about one of its members.

In recent months, and although there have been a series of face changes in the Ministry of Citizens’ Protection, Attica Security and Homicide since the assassination of Karaiwaz until today, the officers in charge of the case have been working intensively. efforts to fill in the missing pieces of the research puzzle. Sources with knowledge of the matter told K that new preliminary investigative steps are being taken. However, they denied the information that the case would be referred to the prosecutor’s office.
