State energy grid operator Ukrenergo said on Saturday that Russian forces have used more than 1,200 missiles and kamikaze drones to attack Ukraine’s power system since October, when Russia launched its first massive missile strike on the country’s critical infrastructure, the Kyiv Independent reported.
As a result of the terrorist attacks, dozens of people died and the authorities forced a blackout.
According to the report, about 250 missiles and drones hit the Ukrenergo infrastructure, which caused a power outage.
It was “the most difficult heating season in the history of the Ukrainian power system,” Ukrenergo reported, adding that 43% of the power grid was damaged.
The UNDP and SBU estimated that in 2023 $1 billion will be needed to restore the energy infrastructure.
Moscow recognizes that Ukraine’s energy system is one of its main goals. Under the Geneva Convention, an attack on vital public infrastructure is a war crime.
Britain’s Ministry of Defense said on Saturday that a Russian campaign to seriously degrade Ukraine’s combined energy system over the winter is likely to have failed.
