Compensation for consumers for power outages – up to 500 euros for households

Compensation up to 500 euros for households and 1000 euros for businesses in cases power outage long duration in both normal and emergency conditions, provides for a new structure implemented by the Energy Regulatory Authority.

The RAE has approved the Network Operator’s (DEDDIE) Consumer Compensation Scheme in the event of a prolonged power outage under both normal and emergency conditions, a decision that provides that:

  • The power recovery time has been set at 12 hours for normal conditions and 48 hours for emergency conditions (eg extreme weather conditions, natural disasters).
  • In case of exceeding the established recovery period, monetary compensation is provided, the amount of which is determined depending on the category of affected low-voltage consumers (household consumers, non-household consumers). This amount is set for domestic consumers at €10 until 2024 and is gradually increased to €50 over the next four years. For non-residential consumers, the amount is doubled. It is noted that consumers are compensated this amount for every 12 hours during which the interruption in supply continues after the set recovery time. In particular, if the damage is repaired (under normal conditions) within 12 hours, no compensation will be given. If the damage is repaired after the first 12 hours, then for every 12 hours the compensation will be 10 euros. In addition, an amount of €500 for residential consumers and an amount of €1,000 for low-voltage non-residential consumers is set as the upper limit of the total amount payable per consumer per year.

The increase in compensation in subsequent years, depending on the category of consumers, is reflected in the following table.
