Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro appeared at federal police headquarters on Wednesday to testify in an investigation into jewelry and gifts given to the then-president and his wife by the Saudi king in 2021, Reuters reported.

The police blocked off the street in front of the house.

One of the jewelry sets given to then-first lady Michelle Bolsonaro, valued at 16.5 million reais ($3.26 million), was seized by customs officials from the backpack of a government adviser returning from Saudi Arabia.

Bolsonaro returned two more gift packages after Brazil’s Federal Court of Auditors ordered him to do so.

The former president said he did nothing wrong when he received the gifts, but the jewelry incident tarnished his reputation as an anti-corruption leader.

His critics said the gifts belonged to the president’s collection and accused him of trying to evade customs duties by smuggling them into Brazil.

According to local media, several Bolsonaro administration officials tried unsuccessfully to retrieve the main jewelry gift from customs at Guarulhos International Airport in Sao Paulo.

In a statement on Tuesday, Bolsonaro’s defense said the gifts showed his commitment to obey the court’s rulings and his willingness to obey the law.

Another gift received from the United Arab Emirates – a rifle and a pistol – was handed over to the federal police.

Bolsonaro returned to Brazil last week after nearly three months in self-imposed exile in the United States following his re-election defeat last year.
