“Cruel Intentions” (“Erotic Games”), one of the most popular and classic American films of the 1990s, is being transferred to the small screen.
According to Variety, Amazon ordered an eight-episode mini-series for broadcast on the free streaming service Freevee. However, it may soon be ported to Prime Video – Amazon has not yet commented on this news.
The story follows two ruthless half-siblings who will do anything to stay at the top of the social pyramid. In this case, the pyramid refers to the college in Washington, D.C. where they attend. When an accident threatens the entire system, they will fight to maintain their power and reputation in any way they can.
This adaptation was written by Phoebe Fisher (Assassin Nation) and Sarah Goodman (Gossip Girl, Preacher).
This is not the first time a film has become a TV series. As Variety reported in a previous report, Amazon Studios is partnering with Sony Pictures Television to produce a television project on IMDB TV.

In 2016, the American broadcaster NBC ordered a pilot (episode one) for a sequel to the film, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, an actress who also appeared in the original film. But, in the end, this project was never realized. Prior to this, the Fox network was trying to create a Cruel Intentions prequel series, which was canceled before it went on the air.
The 1999 film, written and directed by Roger Campbell, stars Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon and Selma Blair. The film was essentially a modern retelling of Pierre Soderlos de Laclos’s 1782 novel Dangerous Liaisons.
