A police officer who was arrested earlier for shooting in the air during incidents outside the ASPOE was released by order of the prosecutor.

A corresponding criminal case has been initiated against him by the Attica Security Directorate.

By order of the head of the Greek police, procedures for disciplinary investigation of the incident are immediately initiated, while the imposition of an administrative measure of restraint at the expense of the involved police officers is being considered.

What do the police say in the patrol car?

A few hours after the incidents at ASEEE, sources of information contacting the crew of a patrol car stuck at the University of Economics told K that indeed there was information from the Emergency Action Center that patrol cars would not pass in front of the building where there was tension.

The three police officers who were in the patrol car claim that they were already on Paticion Street and did not manage to escape along the vertical streets.

They also say that they themselves were moving with the current towards Omonia and considered it safe to continue on their course, given that the warning was about patrol cars that were moving in the opposite direction, passing right in front of the University of Economics building.

Two of them got out of the car and fled, and the driver was trapped. He claims that he shot in a safe place, as his life was in danger, as people threw stones and mortars at him.

Serious incidents occurred at noon on Paticion Street. A group of about 35 people set up garbage cans as barricades and set fire to some of them. Stones were thrown at a passing police car, and, according to the information available at the moment, one of the policemen who were in it took out a pistol and fired three shots into the air.

“Today, Wednesday, April 5, 2023, at around 12:10, a group of about 35 people left the Athens University of Economics and Business and set fire to the garbage cans that they were using as a roadblock along with other facilities.

Around 12:30 pm and while a clear order was given from the Immediate Response Center that no patrol vehicles should pass through the area, an immediate action vehicle with a crew of three police officers was attacked by the above persons with stones, fragments and other objects . items that caused damage to the vehicle.

Two police officers were immediately pulled out of the car, but the third was trapped and used his service weapon, throwing it into the air.

The policeman who fired the gun was arrested and the Attica Security Authority opened a criminal case against him.

By order of the Chief of the Hellenic Police, disciplinary investigation procedures for the incident are immediately initiated, while at the same time, the possibility of applying an administrative preventive measure against the police officers involved is being considered.”
