Classic Disney animated filmMermaidfrom 1989 returns to the big screen, this time in a live-action remake.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the composer Alan Menken — who is known for creating some of Disney’s most iconic soundtracks, including The Little Mermaid, said he’s adapted some of the lyrics to two of the songs that will be featured in the new adaptation. This is because she wants to emphasize issues of consent and female power.
“There are some changes to the lyrics of ‘Kiss the Girl’ because people have become sensitive to the idea of Prince Eric putting pressure on Ariel (to kiss her).”
Menken also said that he tweaked some of the lyrics on the song “Poor Unfortunate Souls”. The lyrics she changed “may make little girls feel like they shouldn’t speak without permission, although Ursula is clearly making Ariel give up her voice.”
And while the Aladdin composer didn’t specifically mention what lyrics he changed in the songs, there are plenty of places that would need a more modern version.
We will see Holly Bailey (Growing Up, The Lion King) as the mermaid Ariel, and British actor John Hauer-King (World on Fire, Little Women) as Eric. “).
