Vrel, the Flemish painter who emerged from the dim light

Artist’s name Jacobus Wrel it is little known and cannot be compared in resonance and recognition with the names of his contemporaries-painters of the 17th century. “Golden Age” in Netherlands went down in history as revolution in painting, emphasizing the everyday life of the townspeople who enjoyed the richness of the globalization undertaken by the Dutch. OUR “golden age” it was also associated with new technical and expressive means. OUR color technology and the training in the art of painting has come a long way, and generations of young artists typified the unprecedented prosperity of Dutch society in those years.

Vrel was one of those painters who, for unknown reasons, were not covered by the history of art. In 1904, at an exhibition of Flemish artists in London, a Dutch art historian identified Brel’s work. Oddly enough, before that it was known as the work of Vermeer and erroneously attributed to him. It shows a woman lighting a fire in the fireplace of her house. There was a familiar interior of a 17th century Dutch house with china plates, candlesticks, a chair, furs. But the rest of Vrel’s works are mostly interior with scenes of everyday life. Those who lived in a rural area or in an urban environment were not easily identified. Vrel remained a mystery for many decades, and even studies of his life and work remain open.

At this time, the famous Mauritshuis Museum of The Hague presents an exhibition dedicated to Jacob Vreul. And this presents him to the world as a forgotten artist who deserves our attention. Although Wrel’s case has been known and studied for more than 100 years, relatively recently attempts have been made to present it more systematically. The exhibition in The Hague makes a decisive contribution to this. The Mauritshuis Instagram account is constantly spreading the word about Vrel’s artistic value by showcasing various works from the exhibition, almost all with scenes from everyday life familiar from the respective works in Dutch homes. Brel remains a mystery, but his works deserve to be discovered.
