Jodie Comer And Paul Mescal were honored at the awards ceremony OlivieBritain’s most prestigious theater awards, which took place in London on Sunday evening.
The two actors distinguished themselves by their first roles, which they performed for the first time in their careers on the stage of the West End. Another big winner of the evening was the theatrical adaptation of the classic Japanese cartoon My Neighbor Totoro, which won six awards.
Oscar-nominated Irish actor Mescal, who starred in Charlotte Wells’ After Sunset this year, won the Olivier Award for Best Actor for his role in A Streetcar Named Desire. Anjana Vasan won the Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Stella in the Tennessee Williams drama, which was called the “best revival” of the play.
According to the Associated Press, Mescal said his meteoric success “doesn’t seem real”. “It’s happening at such a speed that there’s no time to stop and think, ‘This is an unprecedented feeling.’
On the other hand, 30-year-old Comer won the Best Actress award for Prima Facie, which will hit Broadway at the end of April.
Originally from Liverpool, Comer is widely known for his spy series Killing Eve. In her acceptance speech, she dedicated the award to “the kids who didn’t go to drama school, who can’t afford it, who got turned down—don’t let anyone tell you it’s impossible.”
