In Search of Aristotelian Mediation

I leafed through several books on self-help, self-improvement, personal development. I didn’t read anything. And I confess that it is unlikely that I will read in the future. Thus, I may be unfair to some authors and some publishing efforts, but I remain wary of headlines such as “how to deal with stress”, “how to become a better person”, “how to win happiness”, how to achieve it and how others that sound like student reports.

Life is changeable, unpredictable, incredible, every day is a new challenge, it is so unique that it cannot be analyzed in a book that promises to offer simple, progressive solutions to such multi-layered problems. On the other hand, of course, modern man has questions, anxieties, impasses, difficult everyday life, a terribly busy schedule, he asks for answers, even if they are often defiantly naive. He needs to believe that the answers exist and they are concentrated on a few pages.

I recently came across a book on how to become a vegetarian, as if giving up meat is a reading process rather than a conscious choice, but another book on how to live without alcohol. Both are worthy efforts, with a lot of information from other foreign publications and the Internet, and are based on personal experience, as is often the case with self-help or self-improvement books. Anyone who has become a vegetarian or given up alcohol wants to share his achievement with others, involve them in his world, which is now healthier, calmer, with more energy, vitality and light.

For those who are looking for definitive solutions and certainties, such books can be helpful. However, what is most needed today in many areas, not just in nutrition, healthy lifestyles or our working lives, is the search for moderation. Golden balance, where everything corresponds to the correct dose. Famous Aristotelian mediation. Bliss lies between scarcity and excess.
