A citizen of Pakistan, who worked as a farmer in Zakynthos and lived with his compatriots in a house in the Laganas region, managed to visit Athens during the Christmas season. He actually took photographs of a Jewish restaurant, which he sent to his interlocutor in Iran and returned to Zakynthos.

The latter allegedly revealed his real plans in January when the arrested Pakistani citizen returned from Laganas, where he was living in Athens.

According to Mr. Stavaris, some of the recorded conversations show that his chiefs object to the plan of attack, arguing that the area is densely populated and therefore it will be difficult to escape after the attack. Mr. Stavaris points out that there is a report in the case file in which a Pakistani prisoner appears in a message to the alleged “moral culprit” of the planned attack that instead of sending him pictures of the wounded, he will slaughter a goat and send him pictures of the animal’s blood.

Albanian criminal

Asked if his superior had tried to recruit others to take part in the attack, Mr. Stavaris confirmed the foreigner’s connection to the Albanian perpetrator.. The latter allegedly declares that he is ready to kill a certain person, telling him that “this is my job.”

His involvement in the case arose in his second year as a result of processing messages found on the mobile phone of the main suspect, who was negotiating with a foreigner in Iran.

According to Mr Stavaris, most of the remaining foreigners brought in as suspects but ultimately not prosecuted in the case are the Pakistani’s roommates in a house in Laganas. Although some appear to have been photographed with weapons, they were released because they were not – at least not immediately – implicated in the plan to attack the synagogue.
