Thanasis Fiidas, a 65-year-old professor in the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics at the University of Crete, was found dead in his office late Tuesday evening.

His colleagues were the ones who found the 65-year-old man dead in his office, as his partner had previously told them she couldn’t find him.

The Department released a statement on Wednesday morning informing the Foundation of the passing of Athanasios Feidas, who has offered his services to the University of Crete since 1991, stating: β€œIt is with deep sadness that we announce the unexpected loss of our beloved colleague Professor Thanasis Feidas. Thanasis has been working in our department since 1991.

His untimely death leaves a void that cannot be filled. We express our deepest condolences to his family.”

Who was that

Athanasios Fiidas was born in 1958 and was a professor of mathematics in analysis at the University of Crete. He studied at the high school of the Warvakei Model School and in 1981 received a degree in mathematics from the University of Patras.

In 1985, he defended his doctoral thesis at Purdue University in the USA on the topic: “The transparent problem of addition and divisibility in polynomial rings.”

Occupation: 08/1985 – 05/1986 and 06/1987 – 08/1989: Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics, Florida International University, Miami, USA.

09/1986 – 05/1987: Postdoctoral fellow, Institute of Computer Technology, Patras. 08.1989 – 01.1991: Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA.

09/01/1991 – 06/06/1996: Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics, University of Crete. 07/09/1996 – 03/18/2004: Associate Professor of the Department of Mathematics, University of Crete. 03/19/2004 – until yesterday: Professor of the Department of Mathematics, University of Crete.

Research interests: mathematical logic, theory of interpretations, theory of algorithms and their applications in algebra and number theory.
