Its municipal council decided yesterday by an absolute majority Municipality of Athens suspension of issuance of new accommodation permits table space To eight new sidewalks and beyond four squares which will be restored to trade triangle for the next three years.

The corresponding proposal was made by the mayor of Athens. Kostas Bakoyannis council to start related work in the commercial triangle, which will create more free space that could be occupied by existing and new catering establishments.

Recall that the program, the implementation of which is expected, actually completes the pilot activities carried out in 2019-2020. Many of the sidewalks to be built in the area have been formalized since 1990 but have never been implemented. The program includes, among other things, the reconstruction of areas such as Agia Irini and Karitsi, as well as the reconstruction and renovation of existing pavements. It is also planned to update and restore sidewalks on 16 streets in the shopping center area.

Deputy Mayor of Municipal Police and Common Areas Vassilis Koromantos in his speech to the city council, he noted that “the philosophy of suspending the issuance of new permits for the use of common space is based on our belief in the need to preserve mixed uses. We do not want and should not, within the historic commercial triangle, see existing stores disappear and be replaced by others of health interest.”

However, even though the proposal was approved, municipal councilors stressed that the area is already dominated by tables, as the number of restaurants has increased in recent years. They also noted that the measure of removal was “overdue” in relation to the physiognomy of the area.

Failure to grant new permits to occupy common areas in the next three years relates to the following points:

• The squares of Agia Irini, Agios Georgios Karitsis, Agia Theodoros and Hiero Lochos, which are being reconstructed.

• New – under construction – footpaths: Praxtelous, I. Paparrigopoulou from Praxtelous to Palaion Patras Germanou, pl. Karitsis between Praxiteles and Parnassus, Lekka, Agia Irini – Athenaides – Pericleus – Karageorgis of Serbia, from Lekka to Vulis and Antimu Gazi.

• Evangelistria pedestrian street between Athenaides and Ermou and Skuleni pedestrian street, which are being redesigned and reconstructed.
