“When Alkis entered the earth, we also entered. It’s a daily wound to us like we lost our baby too” he said with a sob mother of one of the 12 defendants For murderous attack on Alkis Campanostestifying before a mixed jury in Thessaloniki, where the trial continues on its 19th day.
Unable to hold back her tears, the witness said that she did not dare to look into the eyes of Alka’s parents, and an apology for the great pain they are experiencing is not enough. “I tried to write a letter to express my pain, but where? I thought about going to the grave of a child, but I am not worthy to go…” she added, the mother of the 10th defendant, who, according to the indictment, was holding a sickle.
Conveying what her son had told her about the murder of a 19-year-old, the witness testified: “He told me: “Mom, I never approached Alki. I approached and hit K. (one of the wounded friends of a 19-year-old boy). They hit me, I lost (a scythe), I looked to the right and left and did not find it, then I left. He asked him why he took the scythe, “perhaps because it is large and imposing?”, but, according to him, received no answer.
He was also asked to report previous episode of fan violence in which he participated as a victim 22 year old defendant her son and which, according to the police, allegedly caused Alki and his group to be blindly attacked. According to him, the 22-year-old boy was seriously injured, risked losing an eye and was forced to undergo surgery. “I went to the scene of the attack, tried to find out what happened, filed a lawsuit. He told me: “Mom, don’t look for him, because A. (his friend) will be in danger,” he said.
The prosecutor of the place speaks – and in connection with the report of a specific witness that with the death of Alka she also lost her own child – asked her to indicate who her son was. Then she turned and beckoned him with her hand. Wanting to show that, unlike Alka, her own son is alive, the prosecutor said: “I have no other question.” “There is no comparison, I see him, I touch him, I wait every day to see him. While the child is in prison, I am there too,” he retorted.
The testimony of another mother, the 5th defendant, was preceded by her grief over the loss of Alka. “We are devastated,” she said, adding that it was inconceivable that her child was involved in such an incident. He added apologetically that “we are deeply saddened and regret that we did not do everything possible to avoid the loss of Alka.”
When questioned in court, she looked back on her child’s life, describing him, among other things, as a generous, respectful, “normal child who did not create tension.” Regarding his involvement in the murder, her 23-year-old son (the driver of the second car) told her that he had simply agreed to take them to the scene. “I was there, I watched how to leave. I didn’t hold anything, I was with my bare hands, ”he conveyed the words to her.
She said that before the involvement of the 23-year-old in the murder was revealed, and while watching television footage of three cars, her husband jokingly remarked that one of them “looked like ours”, but it never occurred to them that this could happen. May it be so. “It was like a bolt from the blue… I was horrified, I was shocked,” she said of her reaction to the news of her son’s involvement.
The trial was adjourned until Thursday and will continue with the questioning of defense witnesses.
