The parliament will meet on Tuesday in a plenary session of both chambers, starting at 1:00 p.m., to vote for a new head of the AEP. Toni Greble, PSD’s proposal, Cristian Preda from USR and Iulia Andrea Babeanu, from AUR, took part in the race for the post of Chairman of the Authority.

On March 7, the parliament decided to extend the deadline for submitting nominations for the post of AEP chairman until March 17, after the commissions initially approved only two candidates, Tony Greble and Iulia Andrea Babeanu, PSD and AUR proposals.

When asked if the coalition reached a consensus on the head of the AEP and when the parliament will appoint the head of the parliamentary election commission, Marcel Çolaku said that there were some problems because the deadline for registration was too short.

When asked if the Social Democrats still support Toni Greble as the leader of this institution, Čolaku replied: “Tony Greble was heard in the parliament, he was missed, he is on the voting list. I can’t take away someone’s right.”

The USR announced that it had submitted the candidacy of Mr. Christian Preda, “a candidacy to make the AEP a democratic institution, as it should be an institution that guarantees elections in a European country.”

“PSD and PNL divide Romania day by day like a prey. In the case of the AEP, under the pressure of public opinion and the USR, they took a step back and the former secretary general of the government Dăncilă was not appointed to head this important institution. I appeal to all the democratic forces in the parliament, who understand the importance of this institution and the elections, about which they are not planning any suspicions, to support Christian Preda in the position of AEP president,” said Ionuc Mostianu, the spokesperson of the EDR, according to the party’s press release.

The reconvened legal parliamentary commissions approved PSD’s Toni Greble, AUR’s proposed Iulia Andrea Babeana, and USR’s proposed Cristian Preda for the post.
