A victim of numerous injuries over the years, Juan Martin Del Potro said in February 2022 that he was probably playing “the last match of his career”, but now the Argentine has come with good news for his fans.

Now 34, the “Gentle Giant” (1.98m) has said he could return to the field at the 2023 US Open, the Grand Slam he won in 2009.

“I like tennis. It will never be a problem to pick up a racket and see how I feel. Physical issues, knees, I work on it every day.

I’ll give myself a chance, at least until the US Open. This is a really special tour for me. I still have time, I will resume training, see how my leg and knee react, whether I can or not” – Juan Martin Del Potro for C5N, an Argentine television station.

Del Potro has dealt with numerous wrist problems throughout his career, and his absence in recent years has been caused by four knee surgeries (he admitted he can’t even walk up the stairs because of the pain) and other hand surgeries.

After Queens-2019, the Argentine played one more match, in Buenos Aires-2022, losing to compatriot Federico Delbonisa with a score of 6:1, 6:3.

At the age of 34, Del Potro has 22 titles to his name (including the 2009 US Open) and his highest ranking was at No. 3 ATP on August 13, 2018.
