The absence of some players from the squad called up by Edi Iordenescu for the matches against Andorra and Belarus in the Euro 2024 qualifiers has raised questions and the Romanian boss has now explained his selection.

Edi Yordenescu loves the talent of some players but hates their mentality

Without naming names, Iordenescu said that many talented players were passed over because of their mentality. The selector said that he does not allow himself the luxury of pampering football players, as it happens in clubs.

“The attitude is right and we have a group that wants and is mentally set to get results. Perhaps there are some talents that I have overlooked for now. I like the talent of some of the players that are gone now, but I hate their mentality.

If in the club certain players have a certain status and those who can afford to support them, then in the national team I don’t have time, I don’t have that luxury… Those who come with the mentality to come, and those who don’t , risk being left out.

This is not a message for Ivan, who has great potential. The door to the national team is open to him. Andriy must demonstrate and continue the good trajectory he is currently on” – Edi Jordanescuat the press conference before the match with Belarus, News.ro quotes.

Asked to comment on the fact that he is seen as a vindictive type, Jordenescu responded by citing the example of Alexandre Dobre, a footballer who has complained in the past about not being called up to the national team (despite his good performances).

“Was I with Dobre? Everyone should be responsible for what he says. Well pissed off at my first act, he took a risk, he had frustrations, anger, he said what he said, but his actions proved otherwise and now he’s here” – Edi Jordanescu.

Belarus is a better team than Andorra

“The positive side for Andorra is that we scored, we got the points, but I would have liked the last 30 minutes to have gone differently. We are coming after almost 8 years of failures, there are misses, disappointments, pressure. I believe in the ability of the team, if we secure positive results, everything will change and the game fund will increase.

We were very tired because time was our enemy combined with the road. I didn’t sleep much, the boys didn’t have time to rest. Our biggest task is to recover the players physically, because psychologically they are fine.

Regarding the direct opponent, I can say only one thing, five starting players did not play, three did not play, two came along the way. It is surprising why Belarus chose such a strategy. Perhaps they thought that there was little chance with Switzerland, or perhaps they were confident that they could show a better result in Bucharest.

Belarus is a different team compared to Andorra, they have better technical quality, stronger, more massive, they are more positive than Andorra in the game. Each game has its own story, we are interested in understanding the opponent well and speculating on weak points.

There may be changes, we also have health problems, not serious, but they are there. Tomorrow, around noon, we will try to draw a line and get closer to the first 11, who, God willing, will be inspired” – Edi Jordanescu.

Edi Yordenescu, appeal to fans: “Don’t eliminate yourself”

“It would be a big blow for us to play without the fans and I urge them to be with us. Let them not self-destruct, because without them it will be infinitely more difficult for us. There were a lot of them in Andorra, they supported us, we didn’t score quickly, but they were with us. Our duty is to send them home happy” – Edi Jordanescu.

Romania will meet the national team of Belarus on Tuesday, from 21:45, at the National Arena.
