Greek Google users see the Greek flag waving today as the doodle marks the anniversary on March 25th.

“On this day in 1821, the Greek people began their freedom struggle against the Ottoman Empire,” explains Google.

“Every year this day is a holiday and citizens gather to watch parades across the country. Students walk the streets dressed in the national colors and wave the Greek flag to show their pride.”

“On this national holiday, almost all businesses are closed, except for the famous Acropolis Museum. Many people like bacaliaro scordalia – fried cod with mashed potatoes and garlic sauce – a traditional dish served during the celebration.

“Happy National Anniversary, Greece,” Google congratulates.
