Today, all the municipalities of Attica honor the liberation struggle and the memory of the heroes of the Greek Revolution with parades and events for three days. After the pandemic and two years of restrictive measures, municipalities have returned to their usual nationwide celebration.

From the beginning of the week, the cities were “dressed” in white and blue colors, after which each municipal government produced a common flag decoration of streets, squares and municipal buildings.

The ceremonies were appointed by the mayors and the full program of events was announced, which began today at dawn with a joyful ringing in all churches, as the Annunciation of the Virgin is also celebrated.

The official doxology at the Holy Temples will be followed by the laying of wreaths at the monuments of each municipality, solemn speeches by mayors and local authorities, and the playing of the National Anthem.

The events culminate in parades of students, scouts, local and sports clubs, which are scheduled for 11, and in some cities even for 12 noon. In some municipalities, such as Nea Philadelphia-Nea Chalcedona, Kallithea, Moschatos-Tauros, Papagos-Cholargos, Kifisia and Paania, there are also planned events with traditional dances performed by dance groups or schools.

However, there will be special events in several municipalities over the weekend. The Municipality of Agios Dimitrios holds a photographic exhibition of Ilias Pergantis called “1821” at the City Hall, where through photographs representing various historical events of the Greek Revolution in various regions of Greece, visitors have the opportunity to relive well-known historical events. in photorealistic form and traditional customs of the period before and after 1821, as well as the liberation from the Ottoman yoke. The photographer has collaborated with dozens of cultural associations across the country and with history revival groups. The exhibition is open to the public and will run until March 31st. As part of the anniversary events, yesterday in the municipality of Agios Dimitrios, the presentation of the book of the historian Vassilis Kardasis “Arcadia of Travelers” was held.

The Municipality of Megareona and the Sacred Monastery of Saint Paraskeva Maziou are organizing tomorrow Sunday at the Gerania Museum Center an event that includes experiential and interactive activities, as a “tour” of the people who starred. Revolution and historical retrospective with an exhibition of objects and relics.

And the municipality of Markopoulos Mesogaya will hold tomorrow the anniversary event “Dionysios Solomos 1821 – Tribute” under the baton of conductor Andreas Pilarinos and with the participation of the choir. On the occasion of the national anniversary, the municipality of Paleo Faliro has organized a historic visit to the battleship Averof and its museum for tomorrow Sunday.

Yesterday, Kaisarianis Municipality held a special event on the theme “Women’s Contribution to the Greek Revolution” with the participation of book author and journalist Eugenia Katoufa, accompanied by a choir and dance department.

Finally, in the municipality of Nea Ionia, a concert called “From darkness to freedom” took place. The concert was attended by a choir of traditional and folk songs and a folk traditional orchestra with singing soloists. Folk songs were sung, as well as songs by contemporary authors inspired by the national past, texts related to the liberation struggle were read.
