The situation with the Belarus national team is being discussed in UEFA

“UEFA has long intended to discuss the situation in Belarus at the next meeting of our executive committee,” UEFA president Aleksandar Ceferin of Slovenia explained in a letter from Friday to 100 members of the European Parliament, which was seen by ARD.

The national team of Belarus is one of Romania’s rivals in Group I of the EURO-2024 preliminary tournament.

This is the answer to Polish MEP Tomasz Frankowski (EPP, right), a member of the Committee on Culture of the European Parliament.

In mid-March, around 100 MEPs of all political stripes called on UEFA to exclude Belarus due to its ties to Russia and human rights abuses in the country. “UEFA is monitoring the disturbing developments you mention in your letter,” replied Aleksandar Ceferin.

As ARD reports, the issue of not allowing Belarus to participate in competitions organized by UEFA will be discussed. The Minister of the Interior of Germany, Nancy Faser, expressed her desire to exclude Belarus from UEFA back in September 2022, given that next year Germany will organize the European Championship (June 14 – July 14), the qualification for which began these days. , reports Agerpres.

The national team of Belarus, which is considered the host, will meet Switzerland in the first match of the qualifying tournament on Saturday in new Sad (Serbia).

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, Russia was banned from UEFA competition, unlike Belarus.
