A Russian businessman facing extradition from Italy to the United States has escaped house arrest, Italian police said Thursday.
Artem Us will be charged in the US with transporting oil from Venezuela in violation of sanctions and bank fraud.
The suspect had been on the run since Wednesday afternoon when the electronic bracelet gave off an “alarm signal,” the Carabinieri police said in a statement.
Officers went to his home in Basilio, on the outskirts of Milan, only to find he had left and are now actively looking for him, the carabinieri added.
Ussa’s Italian lawyer Vinicio Nardo did not comment on his escape.
An Italian court agreed to extradite the Russian to the United States on Tuesday, but only on two of the four charges brought against him by American authorities.
The court decided to refuse to extradite the suspect for the alleged additional crimes of smuggling military technology from the United States to Russia and money laundering.
Last year, US prosecutors charged Us and four other Russian citizens with transporting military equipment purchased from American manufacturers to Russian buyers, some of which ended up on the battlefield in Ukraine.
According to prosecutors, they used a German company to deliver military equipment to the Russians, as well as Venezuelan oil.
