The “war” started between Municipalities of Moschatos – Tavros and Kallithea With Region Attica for its reconstruction Faliriko Ormos. The two municipalities jointly ask the region (which undertook the project) to immediately complete the first phase of work and start the auction of the second phase by May, accusing it of unreasonable delays. The region responded by calling the resolution a “travesty”, arguing that the redevelopment would proceed as quickly as possible, and the two municipalities would respond with a reminder of the governor’s successive (but unfulfilled) commitments to immediately auction the rest of the project.

The patience of the municipal authorities in the two administrative districts of the project appears to have run out as the area has been turned into a construction site since 2018 after two decades of inactivity. Last Monday, the municipal councils of Kallithea and Moschato-Tavros met in a joint meeting to discuss the progress of the project and their next steps.

The Governor also attended the meeting, which was open George Patuliswho accused the mayors of Moschatos, Tavros Andreas Efthymiou and Kallithea Dimitris Karnavos, of not passing on to their municipal councils the information they had received from him a few days earlier.

The presence of Mr. Patoulis did not prevent a unanimous decision in favor of Falirikos Ormos. The two municipal councils demanded the immediate completion of the first phase and the removal of the rubble from the construction site (claiming that the rubble was also illegally removed from other construction sites in Attica). At the same time, they demanded the creation of a site management body with the participation of both municipalities. And they warned that if the second phase of the work is not auctioned by the end of May, “we are determined to continue the mass mobilization of citizens and institutions of the two municipalities.”

By their decision, the two municipal councils demand the immediate completion of the first phase.

Patuli’s position

Four days ago, the Attica region returned with a long announcement titled “11 + 7 truths about the revival of Faliriko Ormos and the decision of the municipalities.” The region emphasizes that it managed to include not only the continuation of the project, but also its first phase (ie, 110 million euros were returned to it) in the NRF. Mr. Patoulis blamed his predecessor, Rena Douros, for not securing the resources to continue the project. And Mr. Karnavos and Efthymiou, not only that they withheld from their municipal councils the detailed information provided to them a few days earlier, but also that their attitude is hypocritical, since at this meeting they expressed their satisfaction to him.

Regarding the resolution, which he called “a travesty”, he said the first phase projects (currently at 97%) could not be completed to form a “bridge with the next phase to fund a full regeneration”. He said the excavated materials could not be removed “unless we want the overall cost of reconstruction to skyrocket” as they would be used in phase two projects. He argued that the creation of a joint governing body for the region was not feasible because “European funding of 365 million euros is provided on the condition that the governing body is the region”. However, he did not give a specific answer about the date of the auction of the next stage of redevelopment. “The intention of the regional administration is to hold the auction of the second stage of the project yesterday. However, this does not depend on us, but on the procedures that we must follow from now on.
