The 23-year-old man, who was sitting on the bench of the Mixed Jury, was sentenced to nine years in prison. Thessalonikiaccused of being in May last year killed his 46-year-old father with a hunting riflewhile he slept, in the gypsy settlement “Agia Sophia”, in Thessaloniki.
According to the case file, earlier there was a fight between father and son, as a result of which the latter almost point-blank shot a 46-year-old man in the back of the head, fatally wounding him. In the process of proving, it turned out that their relationship was always tense due to the abusive behavior of the victim on the part of the criminal.
The court found him guilty by a majority (6 to 1) of manslaughter in a calm state and unanimously of illegal possession and use of weapons, but recognized two extenuating circumstances: on the one hand, his minor age and, on the other hand, that the offender was driven to his act due to the victim’s previous misconduct.
In his apology, the self-proclaimed parricide apologized for his act, stating that he was remorseful. “It would be better if he survived and killed me,” he said, referring to his father’s chronic violent behavior towards both him and his family.
The court rejected his claim that he had committed the act in the heat of the moment and ruled that the appeal had no right to stay the execution of the sentence, resulting in the perpetrator being returned to prison.
