German Ambassador to Kyiv Anka Feldhusen says that Russia should be surrounded by a “strong wall” of neighboring states after provoking the biggest military conflict in Europe since World War II, Ukrinform reports.

Feldhusen noted that the topic of walls is a special and sensitive one for Germany, as the country has been divided in half by the Berlin Wall for decades. However, Germany now understands that Russia must be surrounded by a strong wall from others, she said.

“The goal should be to contain Russia. Russia should not be able to attack Ukraine or any other neighboring country again. This is our goal. How is it done? The supply of weapons is one of the components,” the German official said.

“But there must be a very, very effective and strong wall on the border with Russia, so that Russia does not attack Ukraine anymore,” said Anka Geldguzen.

She also noted that Germany has transferred weapons to Ukraine this year as well, assuring that Berlin will continue to do so.

“These are weapons that Ukraine needs,” she emphasized, promising that Germany would help Ukraine with weapons and other forms of aid until the end of the war that Vladimir Putin started last year.

Germany refused military aid to Ukraine

Despite several months of harsh criticism of Chancellor Olaf Scholz for his reluctance to send heavy weapons to Ukraine, data show that Germany has sent Kyiv the largest military aid among EU member states.

The latest Berlin-approved military aid package for Ukraine was handed over to the Armed Forces of Ukraine on March 16, containing 155 mm shells, ammunition for rocket launchers, guns, generators and other equipment.

Olaf Scholz announced on January 25, after intense pressure from Poland and the United States, that his government had approved the shipment of a company of 14 Leopard 2 tanks to Kyiv, and had also authorized any such transfers if Ukraine’s partner countries wished to do so.

A week later, the government in Berlin made the same decision regarding Leopard 1 tanks, but without specifying how many such models it intends to send to Kyiv.
