A federal judge on Monday blocked California from enforcing a state law that requires new semi-automatic handguns to have certain safety features, saying it violates the right to bear arms under the US Constitution’s Second Amendment, Reuters reported.

The ruling by U.S. District Judge Cormac Carney in Santa Anna, Calif., is the latest in a series of rulings striking down the state’s gun laws following a U.S. Supreme Court ruling last year that expanded gun rights.

The judge said the ruling would take effect only after 14 days to give the state a chance to appeal.

Last year, the California Rifle and Pistol Association and four individuals sued the state to challenge the law. The association welcomed the decision, while California Attorney General Rob Bonta’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A 2001 law known as the Dangerous Handgun Act requires new semi-automatic handguns to have an indicator that shows there is a round in the chamber and a mechanism to prevent a shot when the magazine is not fully inserted, both designed to prevent a discharge. random. They must also print a serial number on the bullets they shoot, known as microstamping.

A previous challenge to the law was rejected by the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco in 2018. But the new lawsuit comes less than six weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in June that gun control measures must be consistent with the nation’s historic tradition of gun control regulation.

The plaintiffs said the law failed that test and severely limited the right of Californians to own guns because no new guns were produced that would meet the requirements. That means buyers in the state are limited to models built before 2013, when the law took full effect, the plaintiffs said.
