Who was Spyros Simitis?
Spyros Simitis, who died on Saturday, March 18, was considered the “father of personal data protection” in the European Union.
Professor at the University of Frankfurt, he has written and worked for universities, research centers and international commissions both in Germany and in the European Union and the USA.
He made a decisive contribution to the development and implementation of relevant legislation. He was, by decision of the German cabinet, president of the “German National Council for Ethics and Ethics”. He has also been president and member of international and European committees for the protection of personal data, for example at the European level the “High Level Group of Experts on Social Rights”.
He was awarded honorary degrees from universities in Europe and the United States.
In Greece, he was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Athens.
