General Khaled al-Mahjoub, commander of the communications department of the forces of the Libyan National Army (LNA) of eastern Libyan leader Khalifa Haftar, said on his Facebook page that the containers were found “just five kilometers” from their storage location in Sebha . region in southern Libya.

He posted a video showing a man in a hazmat suit against 18 blue containers, all of the uranium stored at the site.

“The situation is under control, the IAEA has been informed,” General Mahjoub told AFP.

In a Facebook post, General Mahjoub said that after the missing containers were discovered during a visit by IAEA inspectors, “ANL forces found them just five kilometers from the depot, towards the border with Chad.”

He estimated the containers were stolen before they were abandoned by “a faction in Chad, believing they were weapons or ammunition.”

Taking advantage of the chaos and lack of border defenses, several groups from Chad and Sudan have set up bases in southern Libya, neighboring their countries, to engage in various forms of human trafficking.

The IAEA announced on Wednesday that approximately 2.5 tons of natural uranium had disappeared from a facility in Libya, according to a statement sent to AFP.
