Pfizer has agreed to extend its contract with the European Union for its COVID-19 vaccine from 2023 to 2026, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter.
The drug manufacturer proposed to reduce the number of supplied doses by 40 percent and delay the delivery of vaccines, the statement added. Under the amended terms, Pfizer is demanding payment for ordered doses that will never be manufactured, the FT report said.
“Working together, we have achieved significant dose reductions, the extension of our contract beyond 2023 and security of supply should additional doses be needed,” European Union Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides said in a statement.
“If we want to change the supply of vaccines, we need an agreement,” Kyriakides added.
According to the report, the new conditions were presented to the health ministers of the member states in a closed meeting. They met resistance from four member states, including Poland.
Assen Medzhidiev, Bulgaria’s acting health minister, said his country, along with Poland, Hungary and Lithuania, opposes the proposed vaccine surplus agreement.
Medzhidiev added that, in his opinion, other EU members would also not support the proposed agreement in its current form.
“Pfizer’s proposed amendment to the agreement is clearly unacceptable to us, given the critical situation of excess vaccine in Bulgaria and the unjustified financial burden on products destined for destruction,” Medzhidiev said.
“We ask the Commission to return to the negotiating table, fully respecting the given mandate. Until a solution is found, all supplies must be suspended,” he said.
In January, Reuters reported on talks between Brussels, Pfizer and German partner BioNTech amid a global glut of COVID-19 vaccines, with Europe having a particularly large surplus.
The talks included the possibility of Pfizer cutting down to 500 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, which the EU has committed to buying this year at a higher price.
