Oscars 2023: ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ wins big

The surreal sci-fi comedy won seven awards, including best picture, at the 95th Academy Awards. A German film won the best international film award and opposition from Russia was also in the spotlight. DW has the latest.

Box office hit “Everything Everywhere All at Once” won the best feature Oscar on Sunday, capping off a night of several blows for the film, which was a favorite at the 95th Academy Awards.

The best picture category was hotly contested, with the unorthodox sci-fi film winning biopic “Elvis”, psychological drama “Tar”, action sequence “Top Gun: Maverick” and German “Nothing New on the Front”. Western”, which still chose four awards at the beginning of the night.

“Thank you to the Academy, this is history in the making,” said the star of the winning film, Michelle Yeoh, who also won the Academy Award for Best Lead Actress.

The ceremony was held in the shadow of last year’s event, when Will Smith took the stage and slapped host Chris Rock across the face in an incident that made global headlines.

Michelle Yeoh wins Best Actress for ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’

Michelle Yeoh, who starred in Oscar favorite “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” won the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. She is the first Asian woman to take home the award.

“To all the boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibility,” Yeoh said in an emotional acceptance speech.

“This is proof that dreams do come true.”

Yeoh was widely considered a front-runner for what was her first Academy Award nomination.

In the film, Yeoh’s character, Evelyn Wang, is a Chinese immigrant laundromat owner who is dragged through alternate universes to fight an interdimensional supervillain who happens to be her own daughter.

Yeoh started out in Hong Kong action films in the 1990s, where he performed his own stunts. She rose to prominence in Hollywood when she was cast as a Bond girl in “Tomorrow Never Dies” in 1997.

“Ladies, don’t let anyone tell you that you’re past your prime,” the 60-year-old actress said.

Brendan Fraser Wins Best Actor for ‘The Whale’

Brendan Fraser, who rose to fame in the 1990s before a decade in the Hollywood wasteland, marked a major career comeback by winning the Academy Award for Best Leading Actor.

Fraser starred in “The Whale”, in which he played a morbidly obese man who tries to reconnect with his daughter.

“I started in this business 30 years ago and things haven’t been easy for me,” Fraser said, breathing heavily.

“I just want to say thank you for this recognition.”

Duo behind ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ wins directorial award

Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, colloquially known as the Daniels for their work together on “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” won the Academy Award for Best Director.

“There is greatness in every person,” said Kwan upon receiving the award.

“It doesn’t matter who we are, there is genius in everyone, you just have to find it. Thanks to the people who have revealed my genius.”

Scheinert also made a comment in defense of drag, which has been targeted by new laws in several US states.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” was nominated for 11 Oscars – the most nominations of the night. It ended up taking home seven awards.

Indian epic ‘RRR’ wins best original song award

The smash hit “Naatu Naatu” from the Telugu-language epic “RRR” won the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

“‘RRR’ has to win, pride of every Indian […] and put me on top of the world,” song writer MM Keeravani sang to the Carpenters’ “Top of the World” as he accepted the award alongside lyricist Chandrabose.

Earlier in the evening, Indian singers Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava performed the song live.

The performance featured a mix of old and new choreography, but was still a bit more subdued than some of the performances at exhibitions in India, which featured dancing in the aisles.

Rihanna, Lady Gaga and more perform nominated songs

Several of the other artists nominated for best original song also performed live at the Academy Awards.

At the end of “Elvis”, Rihanna sang “Lift Me Up” from the movie “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”.

Meanwhile, Lady Gaga sang “Hold My Hand” from “Top Gun: Maverick”.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” supporting actress Stephanie Hsu also sang “This Is A Life” alongside David Byrne and experimental band Son Lux.

‘All That’s New on the Western Front’ Wins Best International Film

In the middle of the night, the German World War I epic “Nothing New on the Western Front” won the Oscar for best international film.

The Netflix original film delivered a dire anti-war message to audiences nearly a hundred years after the publication of Erich Maria Remarque’s original book.

Swiss director Edward Berger thanked star Felix Kammerer, an Austrian stage actor who made his film debut in the film.

“This was your first film and you carried us on your shoulders like it was nothing,” he told the 27-year-old Austrian actor. “Without you, none of us would be here.”

“Nothing New on the Western Front” won over international film nominees “EO” from Poland, “The Silent Girl” from Ireland, “Close” from Belgium and “Argentina, 1985” from Argentina.

The film also won Academy Awards for Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, and Best Original Score.
