Winners of previous editions
The previous Oscar gala ceremony took place on March 27, 2022. The feature film “CODE” won the “Oscar” as the best film. In 2022, the film, directed by Sean Heder, has already received awards from the Screen Actors Guild of America and the Producers Guild of America. Jessica Chastain won the Best Actress category for her role in The Eyes of Tammy Faye, while Will Smith won the Best Actor Oscar for his role in King Richard.
In 2021, the ceremony took place on April 25 after being postponed by two months due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The big winner of the gala concert was the feature film Nomad, which triumphed in the categories of Best Film, Best Director (Chloe Zhao) and Best Actress (Frances McDormand).
Almost a century of Oscar
The first Academy Awards, later called the Oscars, were presented on May 16, 1929, according to oscar.go.com, and the ceremony took place at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.
After that first edition, the Academy Awards were held at the Ambassador and Biltmore hotels, but as the event grew grander, the rooms in which it was held became too large. That’s why it has been moved to different locations, and since 2002, the Oscars have been held at the Dolby Theater, which was originally called the Kodak Theater, according to oscars.org.
The statuette given to the winners represents a knight with a sword standing on a roll of five-frame film representing the Academy’s original categories: Actors, Writers, Directors, Producers and Technicians. The coveted statuette of Oscar has a size of 34 cm. It was born in the late 1920s after the creation of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (American Motion Picture Academy) in 1927 by the owner of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Louis Mayer. It was designed by art director Cedric Gibbons and worked on by sculptor George Stanley.
The statuette, officially named “Oscar of Merit”, remained known as “Oscar”. Originally used as a nickname, the origin of this name is still unclear. However, it was apparently first used by Margaret Herrick, the Academy’s librarian and later executive director, who thought the statuette resembled her uncle Oscar. The Academy did not make the name official until 1939, although it was already widely used, according to oscars.org.
The statuettes are made of bronze covered with 24 carat gold and weigh almost 4 kg.
The films with the most Oscars in history remain Ben-Hur (1959), The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) and Titanic (1997), each with 11 successes. They are followed by the musical “West Side Story” (1961) with 10 Oscars. The man with the most Oscars is Walt Disney, with 22 competitive trophies and 4 honorary.
