Iga (title champion) overtook the American Claire Liu (56 WTA) and won after only 65 minutes of play with a score of 6-0, 6-1.
Liu’s only win came after the Pole missed a match point at 6-0, 5-0.
Sviatek, a heavy favorite to win the tournament in the Californian desert, will face Bianca Andreescu (36 WTA, 32 seed) in the next round after the Romanian-born athlete emotionally edged out fellow American Peyton Stearns (126 WTA) with a 4 result. -6, 6-4, 6-3.
Indian Wells will be held from March 6-19 on hard and 96 players have started in the two main draws. The contest offers $8,800,000 each for men and women. Titled champions – Taylor Fritz and Iga Svyatek.
