On Saturday, the Hungarian capital set a record for wind power, the gust of which reached 117 km/h on Janos Hill, the National Meteorological Service reported.
According to the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale, at a wind speed of 119 km/h, one can speak of a category 1 hurricane, so Saturday’s record in Budapest was very close to this force, writes News.ro.
The previous wind speed record in the capital of Hungary was 99 km/h and was set in 2019 in the suburb of Ladmanyos.
Much of Hungary was under an orange wind warning on Saturday. Unfortunately, most regions of the country have had little rainfall recently, so the top layers of the soil are dry, especially in the center and northwest of the country. The combination of a dry land surface and gusty winds can easily cause dust storms, Hungarian meteorological services say.
Probably, such a storm caused a serious accident on Saturday on the M1 highway, at the 26th kilometer, on the way out of the capital of Hungary. In conditions of almost zero visibility, 42 vehicles collided, 19 of them caught fire. As a result of this event, 36 people were injured, including three Romanian citizens, one of whom is in serious condition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports.
