New evidence pointing to significant challenges facing the rail network is included in a lengthy dossier that was compiled into the fatal accident in Tempe“K” reveals today.

These are telegrams from the stationmasters of Litochoros and Larissa, which from time to time reached the OSE (and other services) fault recording system and in which serious network problems were recorded.

The telegram sent on October 31, 2022 from the Litochoro station is indicative, in which it is reported that all the traffic lights of the Nea Poron station are completely turned off, which caused a strong protest from the drivers.

“We inform you that all light signals (entrance, exit) st. N. Poron is completely turned off, which caused a strong protest from the machinists. Poron, we ask for their “immediate” lighting (red light) to timely warn train drivers about approaching the station area,” the message says.

However, the issue does not seem to have been resolved, as a telegram of the same content was sent on November 16, 2022, again from Litochoro station. “We know that all light signals (entry, exit) st. N. Poron was completely switched off, which caused a strong protest from the machinists.

The content of the telegram dated November 19, 2022 is also important. In it, the Larisa station department informs the authorities that the electronic scoreboard, which, as K wrote yesterday, has been installed there since at least 1994, presents significant problems.

“We inform you that today, 11/19/22, during the test operation of the panel, the PR circuit (towards the 3rd line) turned red after the train entered and the engraving remained on section 6-4 due to non-processing of electronic changes 115, 116, 117. Also on towards the engine room, the NH circuit remains red at regular intervals and blocks changes 105 and 106 A+B. Please take care of troubleshooting to keep the board working properly.”

Finally, the telegram dated November 13, 2022, which emphasizes that there are problems with central heating in the middle of winter, is indicative mainly in relation to the infrastructure of the Larisa railway station department.

“We ask you to solve the problem of central heating in the city of Larisa as soon as possible, as we receive daily protests from workers and passengers,” it says in particular.

Stationmaster’s inexperience and shift changes

Yesterday was Friday “K” disclosed only statements and testimonies from the materials of the case initiated on the fact of the tragic incident. Among them is the testimony of the head of the station, Paleofarsalos, the first person to rush to the Larissa station immediately after the tragic incident.

The head of the Paleofarsalon station in his testimony emphasized that the head of the station Larisa was inexperienced and that if he had carefully watched the control panel in front of him, he could have prevented the tragedy, since he had five minutes to catch the train’s course and warn the train driver .

At the same time, the head of the station spoke about the conversation that he had with his colleague, who allegedly left Larisa’s headquarters earlier, leaving the accused alone.

“When the train left Paleofarsalos, he spoke to the head of the Larissa station. BS is inexperienced and there are difficulties when traffic violations occur. After talking with B.S., after some time I called P. on his mobile phone, at about 22.45, and asked him where he was, to which he replied that he had left. AND I asked him why he left and he replied, “How long must I sit?” Should I guard him?”.

As it also became known, the 59-year-old head of the station B.S. claimed that after the train collision the departure time of the day shift and the arrival of the evening shift have been corrected with a space.

“The head of the station of Larisa instructed P. to sit down until train 62 passes. Each head of the station, after his shift, delivers and receives the young man, and this delivery receipt after his shift is printed in writing in the appropriate book and the time is indicated, the beginning and end of the previous shifts. After the incident, the self-pickup delivery time was corrected in the income and expense book, which is kept in the office of the head of the station.

“I don’t remember the actual time we signed that I received it. This particular book is always open in the stationmaster’s office, sitting on a shelf, and after the incident, I discovered that the time was right. The actual departure time of P. is around 22:20 and X is around 22:10. I take on an objective responsibility that burdens me as a stationmaster.“.

“Immediately prosecute”

In the “K” case, lawyer Manolis Vonikakis, who represents the family of a 28-year-old woman who died in an accident, spoke.
