Matteo Berrettini had a disappointing start to the season as the 2021 Wimbledon finalist also crashed out of Indian Wells early.
Matteo Berrettini defeated by Taro Daniel in Indian Wells
Matteo, who was accepted directly to the second round (seeded (20), unexpectedly lost to Taro Daniel (103 ATP).
Entering the main draw after qualifying, the Japanese won after two hours and 40 minutes of play with a score of 7-6(5), 0-6, 6-3.
The tournament in the California desert was Berrettini’s third this year. The Italian lost to Andy Murray in the first round of the Australian Open and was eliminated in the quarters in Acapulco (shin injury – he was led 6-0, 1-0 by Holger Rune).
Taro will play in the third round of Indian Wells against Britain’s Cameron Norrie (10th favorite, winner of the 2021 draw).
