New aspects of the circumstances of the deadly accident in Tempi shed light on the testimony of the inspector of the station Larisa, responsible for managing train traffic.

From the answers he received about the trains, the warden realized that “something bad had happened” and left Volos in his car on his way to Larissa. As soon as he was officially informed about the collision of trains, he went to the scene of the accident at 1 am.

He then returned to Larissa to meet with the stationmaster, who, according to the inspector, admitted that he did not realize that the train had entered the descending track when it was supposed to follow the ascending track. The 59-year-old man explained his mistake by the fact that train 2597 arrived a few minutes earlier.

The head of the station admitted that he did not submit a sample notice that train 62 was moving in the opposite direction, along the only descent between Larissa and Nea Pori. “I told the two drivers of passenger train 62 that they had a free line to New Resources station, without specifying which line train 62 was on,” he admitted, according to the inspector’s report.

If the driver had informed, the tragedy could have been avoided

“It is worth noting that if the driver of train 62, at the time of departure from Larisa station, announced on the radio that he was moving between Larisa and Nea Pori stations on a single descending line instead of, as he should have announced, perhaps the accident could have been avoided “, says the inspector.

In his additional testimony, he stressed that considers it reliable that the driver realized that he drove into the oncoming line of descent. “He must ask himself why he is moving in the opposite direction and why he was not provided with a model, and he must make a statement that he is moving along a single line of descent between Larissa and Nea Pori station.”

“In no case is the head of the station of new resources responsible”

The commercial train was moving normally on a double descent and, as pointed out by the station inspector at Larisa, stationmaster Neo Poron was in no way responsible. “And this is because there were no problems between the two lines and he could not understand or even know that passenger 62 went from Larissa to Thessaloniki and not on one downlink.”

In this case, the driver must repeat everything that the stationmaster said, and if he does not, the driver should be asked again if he understood.

In this particular case, the stationmaster had to issue a notice in which he would inform a particular passenger train that it exceeded the red traffic light at the exit from Larissa station and circulated between Larissa and Nea Pori from the ascending line, the line free from the train, until the traffic light of the Nea entrance Pori Station Resources.

At the same time, the driver of train 62 had to announce the model by radiotelephone without checking by the stationmaster. Each train driver is obliged to announce by radiotelephone, based on the internal regulations of the EGS.

No station master reported output light failure

The inspector of the Larisa station, in his additional testimony, stated that before the night of the accident, not a single station chief had reported damage to the exit lamp. At the same time, he added that “for a number of years, until the end of October, the exit traffic light of the Larisa station was always in the red position. From the beginning of November and with the delivery of the road shield (…), traffic is carried out through the shield and in the event of an anomaly, a sample is issued for exceeding the traffic light.”
