A gunman fatally shot seven people, including an unborn child, before killing himself at a Jehovah’s Witness place of worship in the city of Hamburg, police and prosecutors said on Friday, Reuters reported.

The 35-year-old, a German citizen and former Jehovah’s Witness, used a semi-automatic handgun he had owned legally since December in the Thursday night shooting, Hamburg’s prosecutor said at a joint news conference with police.

According to the prosecutor, the victims included four men and two women, as well as an unborn child. Hamburg police said her mother survived.

The law enforcement officers said that the motives of the attack remain unknown, but political motives are excluded. The police, who searched his apartment after the incident, found 15 cartridges.

Authorities said about 50 people were attending an event at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in the Alsterdorf neighborhood when the shooting began.

When police arrived, the attacker ran upstairs and shot himself, authorities said, praising police for their quick response, which they said likely prevented more victims.

The nondescript building, located in a residential area, had been used as a place of worship for several years, resident Annelor Piemüller told Reuters.

A cell phone recording taken by another resident shows a person from outside the building shooting through a window.

“I heard loud shots. I saw a man shoot through the window with a firearm,” said the witness, who declined to give his name.
