British architect David Chipperfield win it Pritzker Prize for Architecture.
A 69-year-old man in an interview with the New York Times from Spain stressed that for a long time he believed that “architecture is more important than architectsand that “we are facing two existential crises: social inequality and climate collapse.”
“In each case, he skillfully chose the tools that were decisive for the project, and not those that could glorify the architect as an artist,” the award jury noted.
Chipperfield is known for transforming historic buildings, such as some museums, into stylish modern spaces.
In particular, the award concerned its repair. New Museum in Berlin (2009) – including salvaged elements of a building damaged in World War II – on “the difference between repair, reconstruction and addition”.
Expansion of the Archaeological Museum
A few weeks ago Mr. David Chipperfield spoke with “K” for the expansion project of the National Archaeological Museum which he undertook.
“This is not primarily an architectural project,” he said with a generous dose of honesty before adding, “We don’t view this project as a new building over an old one. We see this as a way to empower the museum. I mean, from the museological side, it’s basically a project to give more room to (highlight) an excellent (archaeological) collection.”
On the city side, he continues, it is important for him and his team that the new building approach Athens more dynamically and improve the area. “Those are our two big responsibilities.”
