Tragedy in Tempe: investigation continues

Investigations will now be conducted by senior judges, appellants tragic accident in Tempea The Judiciary, by order of the Prosecutor of the Supreme Court Isidoros Dogiakou initiated a re-investigation into the delay in the implementation of projects to modernize the railway network. The tragedy in Tempi, the seriousness of the investigation into the causes of the accident, which gripped society with grief for several days, prompted the head of the Larissa Prosecutor’s Office of Appeal, Stamatis Daskalopoulos, to request from Saturday – yesterday it became known about his actions – the convening of the Appeal Plenum. The convening of a plenary session was requested under existing law to, as mentioned in the Daskalopoulos document, appoint two appellate investigators to conduct investigations quickly and thoroughly.

The need for an investigation by senior judges is justified by Mr. Daskalopoulos in his document convening the plenary session, as he emphasizes, among other things: promptly and thoroughly, either in connection with the participation of other persons in the commission of a crime under article CC (291 violations of transport security), or in connection with the commission of other related crimes. The two appellate investigators, who will be appointed in the coming days, will begin an investigation to establish responsibility, in addition to that already assigned to the station master, and other officials of the EfE and employees of the Organization who, in one way or another, they are involved in confusing those responsible .

As K wrote on Saturday, the investigation had already expanded to find responsibility for the person who replaced the completely inexperienced station manager – he had already been sent on vacation – and others, such as the driver of the fatal train, who did not lose his life in an accident, like other railroads. For this purpose, the conversations of the station chiefs in the area, the conversations of the head of the Larisa station with the train driver, electronic traces of the movement of the train for a period of 5.5 kilometers from the moment of its departure from the Larisa station, notifications about the course of a commercial train made by head of the Nei-Poros station 17 minutes before the tragedy, saying that he had taken the same track, along which the passenger train and others also leave.

In Athens

At the same time, an investigation by the European Prosecutor’s Office into EU funds is already open.

While investigations are ongoing in Larisa and are expected to be completed soon, Supreme Court Prosecutor Isidoros Dogiakos yesterday ordered a new round of investigations into pending rail network upgrade projects. for years. The new investigation will be conducted by Financial Prosecutor Christos Bardakis and will focus on projects that have not been completed, who is responsible, why deadlines were not met, why public and state money was wasted without fulfilling contractual obligations, etc. The new investigation will be conducted in Athens, as The Economic Prosecutor’s Office is based in the capital and is authorized by law to investigate cases of misuse of public money and disloyalty of public officials.

The investigation into backlogs was ordered following a letter the prime minister sent yesterday to the prosecutor of the Supreme Court, basically asking for two things: to raise the level of investigation into the tragedy in Larisa, “the highest investigative level,” he said, and to deepen the investigation into the incompleteness of modernization projects railways.

It is interesting, however, that the failure to perform work on the railway network under previous contracts has already been the subject of a judicial investigation, and not a comprehensive one, but a fragmentary one, and the corresponding procedures are ongoing. For example, the contract for the console was investigated by the Financial Prosecutor’s Office, at first it was in the archive, but then was withdrawn due to the emergence of new evidence of the theft of European funds and is being investigated by the European Prosecutor’s Office, which is also the relevant authority. Also, the Economic Prosecutor’s Office opened investigations on four previously concluded contracts for the modernization of the network, some of which have already expired (2005, 2013, 2015) with the customer ERGOSE.

With regard to judicial developments regarding the investigation into the Tempi tragedy and pending projects, Honorary Chief Justice and Acting Prime Minister Wasiliki Tanu, in her statement, among other things, emphasized “that the judiciary must carry out legally required actions, regardless of anyone’s hints and suggestions,” comments the Prime Minister’s letter to the Prosecutor of the Supreme Court.
