The two were also ordered to pay more than 750,000 euros ($799,000) in compensation to insurers, the court said in a statement.

According to the court, a 29-year-old Mexican woman checked into the hotel in October 2021 with a fake Swiss passport and only a backpack. The hotel employee who collected his luggage noticed that it weighed very little.

The woman, who, according to El Pais, was participating in a beauty contest in her country, was later joined by her accomplice, a 47-year-old man.

They were served a 14-course dinner in the hotel’s restaurant, and were later taken on a tour of the winery.

Shortly after 2:00 a.m., she ordered a salad to the room, distracting the lone night clerk and giving his accomplice the opportunity to retrieve the electronic key from the front desk.

After he failed to enter the wine cellar because he took the wrong key, the woman tried a new diversion by ordering dessert.

The man managed to get a “master key” and thus get into the cellar, where he filled a backpack with 45 bottles, including a unique bottle of old wine from the 19th century, worth 350,000 euros. In addition, he placed two bags of towels in his backpack to prevent the noise made by the bottles.

The couple left the hotel before dawn and quickly fled Spain.

After a nine-month manhunt in Europe, they were detained by border police when they intended to cross Montenegro to Croatia.
