The President of the Chamber of Deputies, Marcel Ciolacu, said on Monday that Romanian women perform several roles – mother, wife, family accountant – “a heavy responsibility”, especially in times of major social crises.
“I know that it is not easy to be a woman in Romania and, in addition to the role of mother and wife, to fulfill the role of a real family accountant. It is a heavy responsibility, especially in times of great social crises, such as the last 2-3 years, with pandemics and war, which fall more and more on women’s shoulders. (…) Let me respectfully bow to all the women entrepreneurs in this country and tell them that we men owe a lot to them. I am speaking before you not only as a person, but also as a politician, the leader of a party for which gender equality, like equal opportunities, is a fundamental value of the modern left,” Çolaku said on Monday at an event organized by CONAF – the National Confederation of Women’s Entrepreneurship. reports Agerpres.
“I am convinced that it is time for us men to admit that we have been too stubborn or too conservative and wasted too much time. I am already trying to recover and have taken the first step in public administration. Together with our partners, at the end of last year we submitted a bill according to which 30% of the candidates on the lists in local elections should be women. Also, 30% of seats in the boards of state-owned enterprises must be occupied by women. (…) I am convinced that gender equality is a goal that can only be achieved by finding solutions to acute problems related to education, demography or social cohesion. (…) I know that we are still a society where men hold most of the top positions, both in politics and in business, and I sincerely tell you that you should not just expect men to step aside. I urge you to act on the call of the first black woman to become an American congressman, who said simply and bluntly – if you are not seated at the table, come with a folding chair,” said Cholaku.
