A woman from Moscow was arrested on charges of treason for allegedly financing the Ukrainian army, Russian state media reported.

The name of the suspect has not been released, the former KGB detained her “while trying to leave the Russian Federation.”

The court in Lefortovo took her into custody for two months.

According to the Criminal Code of Russia, the woman faces from 12 to 20 years in prison. Other details of the case are not disclosed.

According to the human rights association “First Department”, this is the first known case when financial assistance to Ukraine becomes a reason for initiating a criminal case for treason.

According to the association, in 2022, at least 20 people were detained on suspicion of treason and 11 sentences were handed down under this article of the Criminal Code of Russia.

Cases of high treason are considered behind closed doors. Often, the existence of such a case becomes known only after a guilty verdict.
