“Life at OUT stopped at the moment of a fatal collision,” says the rector

His community is shocked Aristotle University of Thessaloniki from the death and injury of students of an educational institution in a fatal accident that occurred in the city of Tempe.

According to current reports, nine AUTH students were killed and 26 others were injured. These are students of the faculties of dentistry, medicine, VOAN (Military School of the Officer Corps), agriculture, pharmacy, physics, law, architecture and pedagogy.

The pain of tragedy permeates every corridor of the university. All students walk around with their heads bowed, not believing that their fellow students and friends, who until yesterday were sitting at neighboring desks, disappeared in an instant.

In an atmosphere of deep sorrow, the rector of AUTH, Mr. Nikos Papaioannou, himself, speaking in cathimerini.grnoted with excitement that this was the largest blood tax the school had ever “paid”.

“The family of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki mourns. She mourns her nine – so far – children who died so unfairly and suddenly in a tragic train accident. Our children, who cannot imagine that they will no longer be among us. Life at OUT “froze” at the moment of the fatal collision,” he said in a statement, adding that “until the process of identifying the bodies found by rescuers began, in silent pain we tried to maintain hope for our children. For the dead, who received the name, are the daughters and sons of some mothers and fathers, including our colleagues. These are our students, some are fellow students, some are friends and relatives, some are close. But for those who have never had and never will have the opportunity to meet them, the pain of loss is unbearable.

Then, in a more personal tone, Mr. Papaioannou emphasized in his statement that “as a father, but also as rector, I bow to the unimaginable that has happened, but I also feel the need to share the painful emotions that overwhelm me to call on all members of our family be strong so that we stand with the families of our fallen students. Stand next to our fellow professors who mourn their children, stand by those who are waiting for a heartbreaking process of recognition, stand by the 26 injured members of our university community who survived a terrible accident but will never be themselves. . Let’s stand up for each other. And let our collective pain become a force that will support the relatives of the victims, a force that they will need to learn to live again.

I personally promise that Aristotle will give every possible support – morally and practically – to the families of the victims of the tragedy, who were also members of our own family. And it will also stand, as befits a state university, helping the state with concrete proposals and projects so that human error can never again be fatal. The psychologists of the Counseling and Psychological Support Center of our University, as well as a special scientific team of the Psychiatric Clinic C AHEPA, are at the disposal of every member of the university community to help cope with the shock that has overwhelmed us all. “.
