Greek public opinion is shocked to see what happened after fatal collision of two trains at Tempe leading to dozens of deaths and more injuries.
According to the latest official information from the fire department, the number of confirmed deaths in the train crash is 46.
However, shortly after 4 p.m., the head of the forensic medical examination of Larisa, Rubini Leontarisaid in statements to Real Fm that the death toll after the Tempe tragedy had risen to 57.
In particular, the forensic expert stated that 14 more charred bodies were delivered to the morgue, bringing the number of tragic deaths to 57. At the same time, she noted the presence of more than ten bags with individual human parts that have not yet been identified.
Earlier, the press secretary of the fire department, Vassilis Vartakoyannis, said that seven charred bodies had been removed from the dining car, which was crushed by the first car of the second place, in the morning.
Painstaking identification process
Regarding the identification process, the head of the forensic service of Larisa explained in an interview with Real Fm that “DNA was taken from each member, so some member that may belong to the dismembered body will be assigned to the body, some members that are not they will belong to a corpse, we will have their DNA.”
“Identification is not our job, it’s not the job of forensics. We help, of course, but the lab belongs to a civil protection team specializing in natural disasters,” Ms. Leontari said, adding: “The investigation into the DNA lab is ongoing. We have 14 results ready, so the identification process is underway.”
When asked about this, she emphasized that she did not have “an answer when the identification process will end”, adding that we still don’t have a real number of missing persons. “DNA is critical, we know that people are suffering, but there must be results to have a clear picture,” he stressed.
On the same issue, the Deputy Minister of Health, Mina Gaga, emphasized that identification is carried out only by DNA, as it was decided not to allow contact of relatives with bodies that could be charred or dismembered. The first results of the DNA identification process, carried out in cooperation with the forensic laboratories of the Greek police, are already becoming known.

In an interview with SKY, he emphasized: “The decision is for relatives not to see, not to contact people who are no longer alive, so that it would be less heartbreaking for them.” As for the wounded, he stressed that most of them are in good condition: ten underwent surgery for fractures, six are in serious condition and hospitalized in the intensive care unit.
It is noted that the rescue operation and the search continues and in fact now focused on the third car, the last of the broken cars, which turned into an amorphous mass, under which there are fears that there are other dead.
Condition of the wounded
According to the latest information on the victims of the collision, six intubated patients remain in critical condition. In particular, 21 victims are being treated in hospitals in Thessaloniki and Thessaly. 14 at AHEPA and 3 more at Gennimatas Hospital in Thessaloniki.
