About 2,000 demonstrators gathered in Thessaloniki, in northern Greece, on Thursday night to protest the mistakes that led to the train disaster on Tuesday night, as police announced a new death toll of 57 and at least 56 injured., writes Agerpres.

Demonstrators threw rocks and Molotov cocktails, but “now calm has returned,” said a police spokesman in Thessaloniki, the country’s second-largest city.

About 700 more people, according to police, gathered in front of the Hellenic Train headquarters in Athens on Thursday evening.

Demonstrators observed a minute of silence in memory of the victims of the head-on collision between two trains in central Greece, including many young people.

Most of the victims of the train disaster were students returning to the University of Thessaloniki after a long weekend in Greece.

In Greece on Tuesday evening, a serious railway accident occurred, two trains collided head-on – one passenger and the other freight. The accident resulted in dozens of victims, many people are still missing.
