There are 57 confirmed dead who were recovered from the wreckage of a passenger train that collided with a commercial train late Tuesday in Tempe.

As reported at an official briefing by the press secretary of the Greek police, police officer II Constantia Dimoglidu, of the wounded, 48 remain in hospital. Six people were hospitalized in intensive care units. EL.AS reported 56 missing persons and, as Ms. Dimoglidou noted, there is a possibility that the family or friends of the train passenger were not missing.

The search and rescue operation continues. Truck cranes lifted two carriages, the first of the second class and the dining car. Firefighters remove metal parts piece by piece. The conditions under which the forces operate remain challenging as parts of the train remain amorphous masses due to the intensity of the conflict.

Firefighters estimate the investigation will be completed by noon tomorrow.

DNA identification

A police spokeswoman said that all the bodies were identified by DNA. At the moment, 55 samples have been taken from the bodies, 52 samples from the relatives of passengers, as well as 26 samples from human organs. The identification was carried out by the special forensic laboratories of the Greek Police “as a matter of priority to complete this painful process,” Ms. Dimoglidou added.

So far, 24 bodies have been identified: 20 by DNA analysis, two by DNA and fingerprint analysis, and two by fingerprint analysis.

While DNA testing typically takes several days, efforts are being made to complete the process by Friday, according to an EL.AS spokesperson. The immediate family and relatives of the deceased will be informed by the head of the EL.AS identification team and the police psychologist, and the delivery of the body will continue.

The first four families of the victims were informed of the identification.

Hotels for relatives

Three hotels in Larisa have been allocated for relatives of the dead and injured.

Commission: Authorities should investigate how the accident could have been prevented

The national authorities have an obligation to investigate the circumstances under which the tragic accident in Tempe occurred, underlines the European Commission.

When asked about this, Adalber Jans, a spokesman for the transport commission, replied: “We cannot say under what circumstances the accident could have been prevented. This is the task of the investigations that must be carried out now, and this is the responsibility of the national authorities. The European Railway Agency is available on request to support national authorities if needed. However, the main responsibility lies with the national authorities.”

Doyaku New Order – Research requests in all directions

Investigation in depth and in all directions, the immediate collection of all evidence and the rapid completion of investigative work to tragedy in Tempe, ordered the Prosecutor of the Supreme Court Isidoros Dogiakos to the head of the Larisinsk Prosecutor’s Office of Appeal, emphasizing in his document that now “the hour of justice has come”, to identify those responsible, “whoever they are, wherever they are, wherever they come from, whatever they represent.”

“Your personal and active presence at the site of the unjust death of so many people to collect evidence that will shed light on the causes of the tragedy is certainly absolutely necessary. These elements must be checked competently, comprehensively and thoroughly,” says Mr. Dogiakos.

“A court decision should not be limited to the criminal liability of specific individuals. On the contrary, a full investigation of the case is required from all sides and the imposition of responsibility in all directions in accordance with the essential criminal norms, the applicable procedural order.”

In his ruling, the prosecutor of the Supreme Court concludes with an emotional charge: “The proper administration of justice will be the best and eternal monument to the souls of the dead.”

Station Master Prosecuted for Felony – Apology Saturday

The head of the Larisa station now faces serious charges. His criminal prosecution for his criminal offenses is related to serial negligent homicide and bodily harm with the same criminal qualifications, and the traffic safety charge against him is the most serious (criminal offense) he brings based on the recent amendment of the Criminal Code (Article 291) sentences from ten years to life imprisonment.

After he was taken to the prosecutor’s office, he was handed over to the investigator and will apologize on Saturday.

In statements outside the courthouse, the station manager’s lawyer said the 59-year-old man was charged with a felony traffic violation.

“On a human level, he is devastated. He reflects on what happened and cannot bear the burden of responsibility. He took responsibility within the limits that belong to him. But it is important to look not for a tree, but for a forest of guilt. There is a whole forest of duties here, ”said the station manager’s lawyer.

“We take our share, and I believe that justice will do its job very well,” the lawyer said.
