
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a press release on Thursday that a Romanian national who is believed to be one of the victims of Wednesday’s train disaster in Greece has been reported missing and that, following checks, the person in question has not yet been identified in any of the lists available at the level of the Greek authorities.
In Greece on Tuesday evening, a serious railway accident occurred, two trains collided head-on – one passenger and the other freight. According to the latest data, as a result of the accident, at least 46 people died, and more than 85 were injured. In addition, many people are still missing.

- “Following the clarifications sent on March 1, 2023 regarding the train accident in the Hellenic Republic, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) informs that on the same day the Consulate General of Romania in Thessaloniki was notified through the emergency service. by telephone of the representative of the Romanian community in the Hellenic Republic regarding the possible disappearance of a Romanian citizen who is allegedly one of the victims of the railway accident on the morning of March 1, 2023 in the city of Tempe. Later, on the same day, representatives of the consular institution also contacted the family members of the deceased.
- In this context, representatives of the Consulate General of Romania in Thessaloniki made urgent visits to the local police authorities in the area (the cities of Larissa, Tempe, Katerini and Thessaloniki), as well as to the medical centers where the wounded are. hospitalized to verify information about the presence of a Romanian citizen among the victims.
- At the same time, the MAE clarifies that on the morning of March 2, a mobile consular team of the General Consulate of Romania in Thessaloniki went to the city of Larisa to check whether the centralized lists that include the dead, hospitalized or evacuated without medical assistance found the relevant person or any other Romanian citizen.
- So far, the person in question has not been identified in any of the lists available at the level of the Greek authorities.
- IAE takes this opportunity to clarify that, judging by the information provided by the local authorities, the procedures for the identification of the deceased are carried out with great difficulty in the current conditions.
