Nearly five months after he resigned from the Ministry of Defense amid claims that talks with Russia were the “only chance” for peace in Ukraine, Vasyl Dinku received a state award from Kyiv on Thursday. The award was presented to Vasile Dink by the Ambassador of Ukraine to Romania Ihor Prokopchuk at a ceremony held in the Senate.

On August 23, 2022, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, signed a decree awarding the State Prize of Ukraine to the then Minister of National Defense, Vasyl Dink, “for significant personal merits in strengthening interstate cooperation, supporting the state sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, and a significant contribution to the popularization of the Ukrainian state in the world.”

“This is not necessarily an award for me, but it is an award for Romanians, for the contribution to support of Ukraine that ordinary people, institutions, civil society, the Ministry of National Defense, the government district had. We must bring the relations between Romania and Ukraine to a higher level, thinking first of all about the future, believing that a strategic partnership is necessary, because in this region of Europe we also have a common enemy. Unfortunately, we also have common weaknesses and we have an economic and social area that we can very well use in a very good relationship for the future. The fact that Romanians spontaneously cooperated with Ukrainians shows that we have an extraordinary potential for cooperation. I think that through an open, continuous dialogue, we can resolve all the disputes or fake disputes that we currently have with Ukraine,” said Dinku, quoted by Agerpres.

Resignation after declaring that “negotiations with Russia may be the only chance for peace”

On October 24, 2022, Vasile Dinku announced his resignation, citing the impossibility of cooperating with President Klaus Iohannis. This resignation came more than two weeks after he said that “the war in Ukraine will continue and that the only chance for peace may be negotiations with Russia”, statements accused by Klaus Iohannis, among others. “(…) probably, some of our high-ranking people need to read the press magazine more often to learn about these positions,” the president responded at the time.

On October 8, Vasile Dinku said in an intervention on the Prima TV channel that “the war in Ukraine will continue” and that “negotiations with Russia may be the only chance for peace.” “Of course, these are difficult negotiations (…) The countries of the world, NATO, the USA should conduct negotiations for Ukraine about security guarantees and peace with Russia. Ukraine itself will not be able to negotiate with Russia, because the political class in Ukraine cannot now allow, assume (…) the loss of territories, the ultimately unjust loss of territories. It would be too big a defeat for politics,” Dinku said.

Dinku also stated that “Russia has the resources to continue the war and that “ideally it would be to reach a situation of negotiations, even if a frozen conflict could be reached, negotiations would still do more good than what is happening now, the destruction of human lives , property”.

Defense Minister Vasile Dinka’s statements, in turn, were supported by President Klaus Iohannis, PSD leader Marcel Cholaku and Prime Minister Nicolae Chuke.

“In this war, Russia is attacking Ukraine. In this war, Ukrainians are paying with blood, and we all have to accept the opinion that only Ukraine will decide when, how and what to negotiate. This position is our official position, this is the official position of the European Union, and probably some of our high-ranking people need to read the press journal more often to learn about these positions,” said Johannis.

Vasile Dinku, “as a personal, collegial opinion, categorically yes, he was wrong,” also told Marcel Colaku, arguing that when you are the minister of defense in a country that is in a conflict zone, you cannot have “personal opinions, beliefs” . “.

In addition, he insisted that Dinku did not consult with either President Iohannis or Prime Minister Chuke before making statements about negotiations with Russia.

“I am waiting for the minister to return to the country from the NATO ministry. We need to have as open a discussion as possible about your opinion. This is not the opinion of the government, and then we will have to cut out this aspect very clearly,” said Nicolae Chuke.

Vasile Dincu says he is unhappy with the way things are developing after his statement on talks with Russia on peace in Ukraine, accusing the USSR of “the mess that was made in Bucharest”.

“I said that we should not leave Ukraine alone, that it has only one chance – to fight, fight to the end, but we should all exert diplomatic pressure so that the Russians leave and stop the terrorist action,” he said. Dynku for TVR INFO, October 13.

On October 16, in Brussels, when Bucharest was planning his release, Dinku wrote on Facebook that he stopped where “the voice of idiots cannot be heard.”

The post is replete with harsh statements such as “the babble of fools”, “the honeyed whisper of scoundrels”, “solemn laziness, weak-mindedness or aggressive illiteracy”, “morons and mediocrity”.
