The Mallorcan authorities have requested the help of a unit specializing in emergency intervention in the Spanish army after the storm that caused the accumulation of a layer of snow more than one meter thick on the island, according to DPA and Agerpres.
Even as Storm Juliet moved east towards Italy on Wednesday, it took hours for emergency services to reach people stuck in high-altitude snow.
Snow began to fall on Monday and accumulated a layer of 1.4 meters in places located at an altitude of more than 800 meters. In addition, the storm caused strong winds and high waves in coastal regions.
At first, the snow caused a wave of excitement among locals and tourists, and hundreds of people headed to the mountainous regions of the Spanish island. But many were later isolated and forced to seek refuge. At Luk Monastery, for example, nearly 100 people were housed after they became stuck in the snow without cell phone signal or electricity.
The monastery of Lluk, located in the north of the island, had sufficient sleeping places and provisions to receive these unexpected visitors for the night. Rescuers from the island brigade arrived at the monastery on Tuesday.
Other areas of Spain also faced unseasonably cold weather, with overnight temperatures dropping to -10 degrees Celsius in the Pyrenees region.
