The Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, Dorin Reachan, spoke on TVR 1 on Wednesday evening about the neutral status of his country, which he wants to preserve, but at the same time, he is convinced that it is time to strengthen the defense capability.
“We accepted the status of neutrality when we negotiated peace on the Dniester, but today we found out that this is not in our hands. We cannot, in case of aggression, take our suitcase and leave. We are obliged to explain to the citizens what this status means, what are the limitations and how we can better strengthen our defense capabilities together with our friends,” said the Moldovan official.
Recan says that Moldovan society today prefers neutrality, and the authorities should take this desire into account.
“Today there is no question of changing the status of neutrality, but the limitations of this foreign policy tool are being discussed. The Republic of Moldova is already on the way to strengthening its defense capabilities. These are neutral countries that have huge investments in defense capabilities and are not considering changing their neutrality status,” he said.
The Prime Minister believes that Moldovan society still needs time and an open and honest discussion, and the authorities should explain more to the citizens what this means and what the limitations are, especially since this statute remains in the Constitution in accordance with the will expressed by the citizens.
