Oscars 2023: Everything we know about the 95th Academy Awards

Hollywood this year again prepares for the biggest film festival: the award ceremonies Oscar.

The leader in the nominations of the 95th edition is the film “All(Everything, Everywhere, All At Once), directed by Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, at a time when the film industry hopes to overcome the slap in the face of last year’s ceremony and its impact on the historic institution.

Days before the 2023 Oscars, below is a list of everything we know about that night.

When is the Oscar?

The 95th Academy Awards will take place Sunday, March 12, 2023 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. In Greece, viewers will have the opportunity to watch the event live and exclusively on COSMOTE TV, at 2 am, Monday, March 13, 2023.

Guest

The American comedian and TV presenter takes on the role of host of the evening for the third time. The event didn’t have a host for years, until last year the Academy announced actresses and comedians Regina Hall, Amy Suber and Wanda Sykes.

In an advertisement for this year’s show, Kimmel noted that he was not suited for the job, emphasizing that he should not be hit for “crying a lot”.

Nominations in the category “Best Film”

10 films competing for the golden statuette in one of the most important categories of the ceremony – “Best Film”:No newer than the western front(“All Quiet on the Western Front”)Avatar: Path of Water“, “Spirits of Inisherin(“Banshee Inisherina”), “Elvis“, “All(“Everything and everywhere all at once”), “Fabelmans“, “Tar“, “Top Shooter: Maverick“, “Triangle of sadness(“Triangle of Sorrow”), “Women’s conversations(“Women talking”).

During the ceremony

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has not yet announced the leading nominations. But, he stressed, all the winners will be announced during the live broadcast of the ceremony. And this is a welcome development, as in 2022 eight statuettes were broadcast off-air and then edited into a TV show to save time. Of course, this caused a strong reaction from people in the cinema.

As for the musical part, Rihanna has been confirmed to take the stage at the Dolby Theater to perform “Lift Me Up”, the song featured in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The song “Naatu Naatu” from the movie “RRR” is expected to shock the audience, while Lady Gaga’s performance of “Hold My Hand” is not yet completed. The song was featured on the soundtrack to Top Gun: Maverick.

This year’s controversy

In addition to the usual absences and surprises, this year’s controversy stems from Andrea Riseborough’s surprise nomination in the Best Actress category. The actress was nominated for her role in the drama film “To Leslie” after a campaign in which she was assisted by many leading actors. When two black actresses – Danielle Didwiler (“Till”) and Viola Davis (“The Woman King”) – went missing, some saw it as yet another racial bias in the film industry. The Academy launched an investigation into Riseborough’s campaign but found no reason to withdraw her candidacy.

Other details

One of the nominations that jump-started the industry was that of composer John Williams for the music he wrote for Steven Spielberg’s Fabelmans. Williams is the oldest Oscar nominee in history at 90.

After two consecutive wins for directors such as Chloe Zhao (Nomadland) and Jane Campion (Dog Power), no women have been nominated in the Directing category this year.

And, as the Academy decided last year, Will Smith, of course, will not be in the institution. After he punched American comedian Chris Rock on stage during the Oscars, Smith was expelled from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the next 10 years.
